Hi Greg,

Thanks for the interesting take on the daggerboard adaptation for boats such as these. Your point is well taken and I will look into the potential of offering a leeboard option for both designs in the future.

Taking the boat out to 18' LOA is one of the things on the list of possible stuff to do in the future, though, I will be honest... it will be a while before I can get to it.

Right now, there are something like seven, sailing Back Bay SOT's under construction, representing both the Doubloon and the Scorpion. They are being built in places as far away as New Caledonia and Australia and also by North American's in Florida and Canada.

It's pretty exciting to have this boat being received in this fashion. While the Doubloon has a, more or less, conventional approach to the design genre of sailing SOT's, the Scorpion is a real adventure in design aesthetics that takes the form to a new place entirely.

I'm glad you liked the Scorpion and I'll keep your suggestions fresh in my mind when I revisit the design in the near future.

Best regards,

I like the single aka version. However, I don't like the dagger board concept. Being a shallow water kayak sailor, I know that the first way you find out you're in shallow water is when the leeboard/centerboard hits. How about a swing keel, or leeboard? Minimizes damage on a grounding. I also have bad visions of the ama bungee connections working in heavy seas. Take this 16 footer to 18 feet, put a pivoting leeboard on it for groundings and to allow sleeping aboard, and you have a very interesting boat that I would like to build.

Anyone build one yet?
